What is OneID?

OneID is the identity and authentication at Macquarie University, where all information systems can be accessed through the one identity. For students, this comprises of a student number and OneID password

How do I change my OneID password?

Step 1: Head to from your PC or device.

Step 2: Login with your OneID staff number.

Step 3: You will be asked to enter the answers to questions that you set up when setting your OneID previously, then click Next.

Step 4: Create a new password that meets the guidelines.

Step 5: Update WiFi, email and saved passwords on devices using your new OneID password. (Mac users, your Mac Keychain password will not change automatically. To update it to match your new OneID password, use the Keychain Access utility located within Applications.)

What if I don’t know or can’t remember my OneID or the secret answers that I set up?

Contact the IT Service Desk on 02 9850 4357 between 8am-8pm Monday to Friday and 10am-6pm Saturday and Sunday..

Is there any criteria I must follow for my new OneID password?

Yes, passwords must be:

  • At least eight characters long

Include three of the following character types:

  • Uppercase alphabet characters (A-Z)
  • Lowercase alphabet characters (a-z)
  • Contain numbers (0-9)
  • Contain special characters (!@#$%^&*<>?:”{}[]’;/.,)

Your password must not:

  • Contain a portion of your OneID number, name or position
  • Consist of a simple dictionary word

Can I use the same or previous OneID password ?

No. The system will not accept any previous OneID passwords you have used.

How do I choose a strong password ?

There a few good methods for choosing a strong password. Some suggestions below:

  • Two unrelated words with numbers/characters separating them -> "Purple15$External"
  • First letters from sentence or song (wall live iayellow submarine ,yellow submarine) with added capitals and numbers -> "waliays,YS74"
  • A short sentence with numbers and characters -> "Strongpasswords#keepmesaf3"

Do not use any passwords that include:

  • A single dictionary word (Today123!)
  • A family member's name or a personally significant date (Koby@1982)
  • An MQ related function, system, department or organisation name (Macquarie!23)
