Eduroam

Eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.

Eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to get internet access when visiting other organisations by using credentials from their own institution.

Connect your device to Eduroam

Macquarie personnel visiting other locations

  1. When on the campus of another participating institution find "eduroam" in the list of available wireless networks on your internet device
  2. Your eduroam username is your OneID followed by "@mq.edu.au" (e.g. mq87654321@mq.edu.au)
  3. Your eduroam password is your OneID password.

Note that eduroam provides internet access only. if you need to access OneNet resources you can combine eduroam with OneNet Anywhere to open a virtual private network connection across the internet and temporarily extend campus network access to your location.

Visitors to Macquarie University

Your institution must be an eduroam participating institution.

  1. When on the Macquarie University campus find "eduroam" in the list of available wireless networks on your internet device
  2. Your eduroam username is your Staff/Student ID followed by "@yourdomain.edu.au" (e.g. 12345678@uts.edu.au)
  3. Your eduroam password is your Staff/Student password (the same one you use at your own institution)

Note that eduroam provides internet access only. if you need to access your home network you will need to seek advice from your institution to find out if they offer virtual private network access over the internet.

Your mileage may vary: eduroam service can vary by institution, so you may need location specific instructions. Within Australia and New Zealand, you may be able to find details in the eduroam tools and resources listing.

To learn more about eduroam you can visit http://www.eduroam.edu.au in Australia or http://www.eduroam.org internationally.

  1. Have not tried this, but can Macquarie University staff who travel to other institutions connect to eduroam when they are on MQU Campus or does it only work for visitors?

If it did then staff going overseas would roam easily with minimal setup as eduroam is available elsewhere in the world and not just in Oceania:
    See https://wiki.aarnet.edu.au/display/eduroam/myeduroam-world

Even better would be that eduroam at MQ Campus provides the same Macquarie OneNet WiFi connectivity for MQ staff (and actually come to think of it students going on exchange or studying here for a semester) without the need for OneNet Anywhere when on campus. Equally would apply to Researchers.

    Any comments?

    1. Hi Daniel,

Eduroam is not intended to be used by members on their 'home' campus, although it is currently allowed.

Anyone with a user account from an any of the Eduroam federated sites can login to Eduroam at MQ.  Likewise, any MQ user can use their OneID at any of the other Eduroam federated sites.

  2. Hello, the 'participating institution' links (2) on this page lead to 'Page not found' space in Confluence.  Can you please update the links? I am currently at Charles University in CZ and have difficulty connecting to Eduroam. All the best, A.

    1. Hi Adela,

      Links have now been updated.

      Thank you.
